佛教各宗派对其教主释迦牟尼一生所说的教法，有不同的“判教”。在我国如华严宗判为“五教”，“顿教”居第四位，指不设位次、不依言辞而顿悟教理的《维摩经》等。天台宗列为“化儀四教”之首。
