指乡里中貌似谨厚，而实与流俗合污的伪善者。原，同“愿”。谨厚貌。
子曰：“鄉原，德之賊者也。”

一本作“愿”。
乡者，鄙俗之意。原，与“愿”同……盖其同流合污，以媚于世，故在乡人之中独以愿称。 —朱熹集注
