我国少数民族之一。分布在内蒙古和辽宁、吉林、新疆、黑龙江、青海、河北、河南、甘肃等省区。正史始见于《旧唐书·北狄传》，称“蒙兀室韦”。13世纪初，成吉思汗统一蒙古各部。其后，忽必烈建立元朝（1271—1368年）。1947年建立了内蒙古自治区。建国后，又相继建立了自治州、联合自治州、自治县。
