第二次世界大战后（1945年）成立的国际组织。总部设在美国纽约。主要机构有联合国大会、安全理事会、经济和社会理事会、托管理事会、国际法院和秘书处等。行政首长为秘书长。根据联合国宪章规定，其主要宗旨是维护国际和平与安全，发展国际友好关系，促进经济文化等方面的国际合作。到1987年，已有会员国159个（包括苏联的加盟共和国白俄罗斯和乌克兰）。
