官名。宋初鉴于五代藩镇之乱，留居诸镇节度于京师，而以朝臣出守列郡，称“权知某军州事”，意为暂行主管某军州兵政、民政事务。其后文武官参为知州军事，总理郡政，省称曰知州。明清因之，并定知州为官名。
