1 佛教各派对其教主释迦牟尼一生所说的教法，有不同的判教说，在我国如天台、法相、华严诸宗各异。一般以渐教和顿教判摄释迦一代的教法。所谓“渐”，指说法的由浅入深阶梯。由渐到顿，即由小乘到大乘。
小乘，漸教也，故開三浄之食，而此伽藍遵而不墜。

2 指主张须经长期修习，才能把握佛教真理，即倡“渐悟”的教派。与主张“顿悟”的顿教相对。禅宗在诸派中属顿派；禅宗内部，北宗神秀侧重渐修，南宗慧能则提倡顿悟。
