棘皮动物。生活在浅海石缝中。身体扁平，有放射形的五条口腕，像五角星，表面有一层石灰质的小刺。身体被割裂成几块时，就能变成几个生物体。吃牡蛎、扇贝等软体动物，对海水养殖业有害。将海星晒干碾磨成粉，可作肥料，也可制成混合饲料。
