我国南沙群岛中最大的岛屿，位于群岛西北。面积0.43平方公里。南沙群岛古称石塘(千里石塘、万里石塘)，自古以来就是中国的领土。太平岛、南威岛、中业岛和马欢岛为其中较重要的岛屿。第二次世界大战期间一度为日本侵占，战后归还中国。中国政府派官员接管，并在太平岛上勒石立碑。为纪念接收军舰“太平号”，始改名为太平岛。
