春秋楚国伍员，因家族被楚王诛灭而奔吴，谓其友申包胥曰：“我必復楚國！”包胥曰：“子能復之，我必能興之。”后伍率吴兵破楚，申包胥乞师于秦。秦王不许。申“立依於庭牆而哭，日夜不絶聲，勺飲不入口七日”，秦为所感，遂救楚。事见《左传·定公四年》。后世以“哭秦庭”为请兵抒国难之典。
